Situational Analysis:
(Not the actual words)
A worker in the factory was caught sneaking out with a couple of light bulbs. The security personnel questioned him and the worker claimed that he had bought the pair of bulbs, but they were not recorded when he entered the facility. You are in charge of administration in the facility and must find a favorable solution. Keep in mind that the company is very strict with its policies on theft. Also, the worker is a member of the workers' Union which may shut down the factory if the worker were to be aggravated. The judicial system is also very strict against such lay offs and may take serious steps against the company. Find a feasible and practical solution to the above problem.
Wrote two practical solutions to the above problem. 30 minutes time to write, which is enough in my opinion. At the end you had to choose one of the two solutions as the best one and which you would have applied in the situation.
Personal Interview stage:
M1 = Middle Aged professor (I think)
M2 = Middle aged professor or alumni
Me
I walked in and the usual pleasantries were exchanged and I was asked to sit down.
M2 : So Arka, tell me what is so special about Applied in Applied Electronics and Instrumentation which you have entered as your degree major ??
Me : Talked about the practical application of the subject and how we can be compatible with any form of industry.
M2 : So what's the difference in the subjects that are taught in your department as compared to the other Electronics departments ??
Me : You see sir, we are basically taught a little from everyone's curriculum. A little o chemical, a little of ECE, a little of IT etc. (We are basically the jacks of the trade.)
M1 : So tell me Arka, what other calls have you got ?
Me : Sir I have got calls from MDI, NITIE and IMI-Delhi.
M1 : And no IIMs ??
Me : No sir :).
M2 : Why no IIMs ?? Is it because of your sectionals ??
Me : I am not sure sir. The IIMs have eccentric ways of selection. (As if I told them not to select me :D)
M1 : So have you attended any campus interviews, Arka ??
Me : Yes sir, I sat only for one company to keep a backup and that is Ambuja Cements.
M1 : So why not joint that company and get some experience ??
Me : No sir, I want to accelerate my career at this point of time and want to get myself into a good company after I finish MBA. I want to finish my studies first and then look forward to working.
M2 : (suddenly) So tell me what's your opinion on life ??
Me : (wtf !! Life ?? I am not exactly the spiritual type, you know?) Sir I think I have too little knowledge to make an educated comment on the matter. I mean, it's a very deep matter.
M2 : But still, you have lived...(looks into the form)...22 years of your life, how much percentage is that ??
Me : (smiles) Sir, I don't know how long I would live. So I can't tell you the percentage.
M2 : Okk take a guess, consider the average.
Me : One-third I guess sir, maybe a bit more if I am lucky :).
M2 : (presses on) But still tell me your opinion.
Me : Sir, I think that if we humans put our mind to something then we can definitely achieve anything. For example I didn't do good after my +2 since I was not focused, and got confused between IIT, WBJEE and AIEEE. During CAT I was much more focused and thereby achieved a decent level of achievement.
M2 : Hmmm. That's good ! What else ??
Me : Sir, I think that we should also try to experience different things in life so that we do not regret anything later. If you will look into my hobbies you will see that I like sports, music, reading as well as writing. We should always try new things.
M2 : So what new things have you tried recently ??
Me : (He He) Sir I have started writing professional articles for different blogs. Sort of freelancing.
M2 : So do you get paid ?? How much have you saved ??
Me : Sir about ** dollars.
M1 : So tell me Arka, suppose I were interested in this work, how would I start ??
Me : Well sir, there are two ways. There is a site called xyz.com where you can put up your profile and then apply to jobs. Or you can work with an acquaintance (a friend) who would act as the mediator between you and the client.
M1 : Hmmm. That is nice. So music ?? What guitar do you play ??
Me : Sir, spanish.
M1 : Lead ??
Me : Yes sir.
(Now comes the worst part of the interview where I think I screwed up big time. I was semi-honest. Actually I was fighting with my conscience.)
M1 : So Arka, suppose you were to convert all of your calls, that is , MDI, NITIE and IMT-G. where would you go ??
Me : (sweating :P) Well sir truthfully speaking, I would go for NITIE since the fees are very low. I cannot compare the colleges on any other grounds since all of them are at a same footing.
M1 : OK. Now between MDI and IMT-G where would you go ??
Me : (C'mon sir, where would YOU had gone) Sir I think that the marketing in IMT-G is very well renowned. MDI is a tad bit more costly.
M1 : I see. Well Arka that's it from our side, do you want to ask us something ??
Me : No sir, thank you.
Both : Best of luck for your other calls, Have a nice day !!
Just for the record my primary aim is MDI-Gurgaon, then NITIE and then IMT-G. I am really sorry that I had to lie, but it was simply for the interview. Maybe I should have been truthful. Apologies.
All in all, the interviewers were very friendly and supportive. No pressure from their side. They didn't ask me anything out of the ordinary. I kept my calm, though it wavered in the end.
Feedback is welcome !!
- Arka
