Head and Tail: The two faces of my trip to Mumbai.
DAY 1 (14-04-2010):
So I was flanked by my parents and Mr. MU, as we reached Howrah station. The HWH-CSTM special was standing there waiting for people to board. I was in the B2 A.C. 3-tier coach with my berth being right next to the door. As the train rolled out and I bade farewell to my escorts and then settled into the upper berth. Soon we were supplied with blankets and quilts, although I didn't think that they would be necessary. I mean it was almost 40 degrees outside and the A.C. would have a huge task even cooling to 20 degrees, what with the constant manner in which the door was opened. Boy, was I wrong. The temperature was soon low enough for me to start shivering a bit, and the fact that the duct was right above my head didn't help either. I could barely hold onto the Paulo Coelho book that I was reading and decided that it was high time to put the quilt in use. The railways, it seems, do supply good quality quilts as it was pretty warm inside it. Since it was night and the compartment had tinted windows, I could not amuse myself watching the view outside. I entertained myself reading the book which was slowly beginning to get interesting and the Phillips GoGear mp3 player was working like a charm. I noticed that the rhythmic motion of the train acted as an excellent sleeping pill and I found myself drifting in and out of sleep. Only at about 9:30 p.m. did I make way through the train to find the pantry car to order my dinner. Wow! The rest of the train was like a furnace. Had rice and chicken curry and went off to sleep.
DAY 2 (15-04-2010):
Woke up to find the almost empty compartment to be almost full. There were people chattering all about me and I could smell the aroma of ghee-coated parathas and the mouth-watering smell of mango pickle. I bought tea from one of the vendors going around and sat by the window looking outside. The tinted windows perfectly filtered out the heat and the glare so that I could see the view outside. A short trip to the bathroom proved to be quite eventful as I found that the bathroom was not smelling, but the water almost burnt my fingers. I found an ingenious device atop the commode called, automatic janitor ,which leaked out a steady stream of water and perfumed disinfectant onto the commode. Back on my seat, I returned to the book and delved myself into the illusion filled world of fashion and films. The winner stands alone, by Paulo Coelho, portrayed a vivid picture of the celluloid world and the not-so-known facts about it. I said a small mental thank you to the girl who had given it to me. Now Mr.MU seemed to be keeping a constant tab on me, calling me at almost every third hour. I had to often search for a proper network and most of the time my phone showed no network. And boy was the roaming charges burning through my pocket. Still the book and the headphones kept me busy for a long time until I had lunch. After lunch I went looking around the compartment and saw how clean it was. There was always an attendant waiting right outside the cabin door (since attendants don't need A.C.) to cater to the needs of everyone. All you had to do was ask. I had an early dinner and slept a disturbed 3 hours worth of sleep. The interview at hand as well as the fact that I had to go about an unknown city alone was a bit intimidating. A previous discussion with fellow passengers had convinced me to get down at Dadar. When I woke up we had already reached Kalyan.
DAY 3 (16-04-2010):
I got down at Dadar and went straight to the first-class waiting room. It was 3:30 in the morning and I had to wait until at least 4:30 to board the next local train to Vikhroli. The wait wasn't too bad and a trip to the toilet did little to freshen me up. At 4:30 I went to the ticket counter and asked about the details for the train to Vikhroli. The man at the counter gave me a ticket for a slow local (since the fast would be too fast for me) and I made it to platform 1 where the train was due to arrive. The train resembled the metro trains of our city minus the automatic doors. A man helped me get down at Vikhroli from where I took an auto to NITIE. The night ride was exhilarating and after 25 minutes and 61 rupees I stood inside NITIE. Although it was dark, it was hard not to notice the winding uphill road which went though the institute. I made my way to the top of the hill to find the MDP hostel where I was put up at room 304. To my surprise there was someone present there, and I kind-of kicked him out (he was leaving anyways). The room was, in short, awesome! Spacious, clean, double beds, T.V., A.C. and most importantly a nice bathroom. I had my first proper bath in two days and boy was that necessary. I cleaned up and got ready for the interview. I even ran into one of my friends from college and together we made way to the academic center of NITIE. Darshan and his team did an excellent job in keeping us entertained throughout the process. I really liked Mr.Basu, whose quizzes kept me awake (come on I hadn't slept the last night) and after my GD my body seemed to be giving in. But I managed to keep my wits about me and quite soon after lunch my PI was completed. I could finally go back to my room and give in to exhaustion. I slept till 9:30 in the night and then went down to the mess to have dinner. The food was nothing short of wonderful. At 35 bucks you had a buffet and I settled with 4 rotis, a mixed sabzi with eggs, two types of dals, a papad and a rasgulla (I was ravenous). I even took up a bottle of Thums up to down all the gourmet in case they decided to explode in my stomach. I even got a chance to chat with my friends from the free cyber-room on the ground floor of the MDP hostel. The night proved to be lucky too, as I sat watching LOTR: The Fellowship of The Ring on T.V. with the weather quite cool (thanks to the A.C.) and it wasn't until 1:30 a.m. that I went to sleep.
DAY 4 (17-04-2010):
It was my last day in Mumbai and I had to see the beach. So I got dressed and did the necessary research to reach Juhu beach. Then I walked down to the main gate of NITIE (which is around 2-3Kms from the hostel) and took the 186 bus to Andheri West. The bus ride took me through Andheri East and I couldn't help but admire the innumerable buildings of magnificence. The huge complex of HUL, the shiny building of YES bank and so many more. It was a sight for sore eyes. Once at the Andheri West Terminal, I had to ask a lot of people to point out the way to Juhu. I crossed the entire station and on the other side took an auto which took me to Juhu Beach. To say that it was beautiful would be an understatement and I had a nice walk, a tasty paw-bhaji and a few peeks at bikini-clad women in the resorts nearby. I made my way back to NITIE in the same way and packed my stuff for I had my train scheduled at 8:30 p.m. I was sorry to leave the place and as I found out later, it was also the start of the bad-half of my journey. I inquired about the best way to reach Lokmanya Tilak as it was from there that Howrah-Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Fast left from. I found out that I had to make way to either Vikhroli or Kanjurmarg and then take a train to Kurla and from there take an auto to the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). I walked down the winding road from the NITIE gate to the nearest crossing and asked a policeman for the bus-stop to go to Kanjurmarg. Instead of pointing out the way, the radical policeman gave me a lift on his bike to the stop (he was going there anyway) and I had my first ever police vehicle ride. At the stop, I asked a man about the bus, and I got a detailed analysis of the bus ride to Kanjurmarg. Of course the buses were super-cramped and unlike the buses in Kolkata, they hardly cared for the passengers. I couldn't make it to the bus the man pointed out but got up onto the next one (since he said that most buses went that way) and guess what, it didn't go to Kanjurmarg. On top of that the conductor was outraged at me traveling to the next stop for free and demanded that I take a 3 rupee worth of ticket. I wasn't in a mood to comply and I haggled it out with him and got down at the next stop. There I got up onto a proper bus to Kanjurmarg. At the station as the train arrived I saw that it would be difficult for me to get up since it was quite crowded. I had to run with my luggage and barely managed to get up on the train. There was also a mild bomb scare as the owner of a small bag couldn't be found. Later the man, who had gone to hang out of the door to chill out, came to claim the baggage just as it was being decided to throw it out. Somehow I made it to Kurla station and then to LTT. Then I got quite a nice news, I didn't have a confirmation on my ticket, it was an R.A.C. and that too in the sleeper class. This spelled D-O-O-M. I saw that there was another person on the same berth as mine (S5 63) and I had to share my sleeping space with some unknown bloke. The inside of the train (sleeper class) was a complete reverse of what I had seen in the A.C. compartment of the previous train. It was dirty, the toilet smelled and I could even see the omnipresent stains of the worst kind. The 6 berths next to me was filled by a family of the minority kind, which constituted the father, the mother, the uncle and 9 kids and a baby. One of the berths housed three of those kids. There were also those people with W/L tickets who thought it to be their birthright to sit anywhere they liked. In all the place smelled, was crowded and dirty and of course mother nature didn't make it any easier. I didn't even feel like opening the book which was left unfinished. I settled with listening to music and looking outside, letting the blast of somewhat cooler air calm my nerves. I was pissed off to say the least. I had a rough night too. For the first time I understood fear. My nerves were already frayed with anger as well as disappointment. The one who I had hoped would call me, didn't, and I spent a sleepless night. The train kept true to its name of being superfast. It moved at a blinding speed and I don't know why I feared that we would crash. I could see in my dreams how our train collided head on with another one. Sometimes I would hear the shrill noise of a similarly paced train blasting by in the next track as if missing by mere chance, and my heart skipped a beat. It happened again and again, to my left and to my right, and my heart was definitely doing 150 or above. I feared, not death, but disappointment. I feared that if it ended now I would break all the promises and dreams. I feared failure.
DAY 5 (18-04-2010):
The new day brought new passengers. Ones I would call the hooligans. They were a batch of freshly graduated students from an unknown college for P.Ed. students and the word rustic would be equivalent to genius to them. To them "hey man" was "oi gud marani", "what are you doing?" was "ki bal chirchish", and every word , as a rule, had to followed by "bara". I was more disgusted with the fact that I could perfectly understand their conversation, but never had I been in such company. They had luggage which would put to shame the collection of a film star. They had to sacrifice two bunks just to stash in their trunks and satchels, and I was lucky that I had few luggage which lay cornered under my seat. Of course they were dirty, they ate without papers, soiled the floor and then threw the empty(or not so empty) foils straight out of the windows. Then there were those who slept on the floors. These were the ones who had a ticket but they were all wait-listed. Legally they are not eligible to travel but dare you explain it to them. They made motion between your berth to the toilet difficult. But once you visited the toilet you wouldn't want to return so that wasn't much of a problem. I kept myself busy listening to music and looking outside the window. Fortunately the person sharing my berth was a good guy, definitely clean and he was even gracious enough to let me lie down while he spent most of the night sitting by the window. Then came evening and she called. It was like throwing a lifeline to me. It was like seeing a lamp at the end of the tunnel. The change in my mood was literally visible and I kept telling my mind that the end of this hell-hole was near. I had a sound sleep that evening, even though the conditions had not improved. I understood how much of a control the mind has over your body. Even though the train blasted through on the tracks, even though there was a huge din as it crossed another equally speedy train on a bridge, I didn't feel any fear. I was at peace and I slept well. I woke up when we were just entering Tatanagar and I knew that in another 3-4 hours I would be home. I spent the rest of the time watching the hooligans debate as to who could drink alcohol the most and about the funny things they had done in hangover period. Soon we passed Kharagpur and I got ready to get down. As the train eased into the station I could not help but jump down from the litter bin and ran all the way to feel the Kolkata air. I was home, I was happy, no more could I get lost, no matter where I was.
DAY 6 (19-04-2010):
This is just in continuation of the previous day since I had reached Howrah at 4:00 a.m. in the morning. There weren't many means of communication available at that time. I lugged my luggage onto a bus that would take me to Sealdah station from where my house is a walking distance. As I walked down all the known streets and saw all the known buildings I couldn't help but feel the security. It was like a protective shield around you, the promise of familiarity, a place where you couldn't get lost, a place which is your own. Back home I took a bath at the wee hours of 4:30 and I had to shampoo my hair or else I could not even pass my fingers through it. And as I went to bed I thanked Mr.MU who had been by my side from start till the end, albeit on the phone. I thanked her because she had called when I thought she wouldn't. I thanked the mp3 player which had given me steady service throughout my journey. Although I was quite pissed off at my parents for not getting me a proper berth in an A.C. coach, still I couldn't blame them fully because they couldn't help if tickets were unavailable. And as I lay in my bed I could see the sun rise through the window, the sun which had remained the same lighting our day. But I wouldn't let even the sun to ruin my dreams. I wanted to sleep, and so I did.

NITIE Mumbai GD/PI Experience (2010-12)
Education and CAT details:
Xth - 94% (best 5)
XIIth - 91.75% (best 4 including Eng)
Grad - 8.13 CGPA (final year)
CAT- OA QA DI VA
98.50 91.12 91.85 99.52
So I went to NITIE Mumbai, alone, for my GD and PI which was on the 16th of April. It was a really awesome and learning experience. I really liked the B-school. It was extremely scenic and well maintained. I would surely be looking forward to studying in this B-school. Hope I convert.
GD Topic:
When in Rome, do as Romans do.
It was a civilized and proper GD. I had one of my friends in the group and I knew that it would be quite competitive as well as a very good one. I started the GD and then entered a few times with points, counters and acceptances. I was also one of those who put in a summary to the GD. The GD lasted for around 20 minutes, longest GD I have ever been to. Points kept in flowing, including some irrelevant ones, but we were able to keep the GD in track and prevented a fish market situation. The group concluded that it is not a wise idea to blindly do as Romans do (in Rome) but we must choose to do those things which have a positive effect on society. Overall, a good GD and I believe everyone should get good marks in this. The panelists didn't speak at all (other than saying Good Afternoon when we wished them and they gave the mandatory instructions) and communicated through a bell. *Ting*
Before we entered the scene, one of the seniors pointed out that one of the Lady panelists was a senior Economics professor and we needed to impress her.
After this we were asked to sit in the auditorium where they played Andaz apna apna (come on people bring in some variations) and then played Bheja Fry and Kung-Fu Panda. The seniors were extremely helpful and did everything in their power to help us have a wonderful time. Kudos.
Personal Interview
Although I had got a call for PGDIM I was scheduled for a PGDITM panel and I had to wait until all the ITM call-getters had finished with their interviews, after which they took interviews of the remaining IM candidates. Basically the rescheduled candidates had been divided amongst the 6 panels.
There were initially four professors out of which one walked out before my interview and I was left with:
P1 = Lady professor
P2 = Middle aged Professor
P3 = Old Professor (Didn't ask me anything. Was a silent spectator)
Before I entered one of the seniors told me that they were all IT based. (I used this information to my advantage at a later stage :D)
Me : Good afternoon Sirs and Ma'am (The door was open and I was asked to come in even before I could ask permission so I didn't get a chance for that)
All 3 : Good Afternoon.
P1 : So you are an instrumentation engineer. Interesting.
Me : Yes ma'am
P2 : Arkajyoti, please give us a brief introduction about yourself.
Me : (I knew that I didn't need to talk about my college or schooling as they already knew all that) I am an honest and hard-working person who likes a good sense of humor......(:P)
P2 : (although he was busy with paperwork, cut in) So do you have a good sense of humor or do you like a sense of humor.
Me : Sir they are both inter-related. Only a person with a sense of humor can properly like humor in itself. (This is where I realized that no matter how bored or uninterested the panelist may seem, he is always paying attention to what you say)
P1 : Arka you have rescheduled your date right?? What was the original date ??
Me : Ma'am it was on the 12th of April.
(All 3 search through the papers looking for my name in a kind of attendance list. P2 finds it and tells the others)
P1 : So Arka tell me about this final year project you are doing ??
Me : Ma'am we are basically trying to measure muscle power by using a piezoelectric crystal to transduce pressure into an electrical signal and then display it using a 7-segment display.
P1 : So why are you using a piezoelectric crystal and not any other instrument ??
Me : Ma'am you see, the motion of the muscle is very subtle and we needed a very sensitive transducer for this and so we selected the piezoelectric crystal.
P1 : So how are you converting the analog signals into digital pulses ??
Me : Ma'am we are using a sample-and-hold circuit whose output is fed to the 0808 A/D converter and this produces a digital signal which is then fed to the microcontroller/microprocessor.
P1 : So how does a 7-segment display work ??
Me : Ma'am basically it consists of 7 LEDs and we can put on and off any of them depending on the logic required.
P1 : But how are they numbered ??
Me : Ma'am we start with the topmost as 'a' and then we have 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e', 'f' and 'g' as the center going clockwise.
P1 : I see. So instrumentation eh ??
Me : (smiles) Yes ma'am
P2 : So what are your favorite subjects ??
Me : (AHA !! You are all IT professors eh ?? Am not gonna say any IT subjects here :D) Sir mostly Instrumentation, Process Control, Sensors and Transducers etc.
P1 : I see. So what is the basic principle of an Oscilloscope ??
Me : Ma'am a CRO ??
P1 : Yes yes
Me : Ma'am basically the beam produced is deflected by two sets of plates, the horizontal and vertical plates, and this produces the necessary pattern We apply the variable signals to these plates and get the visual output on the screen.
P1 : OK. So what is a PLC ??
Me : (He He!) Ma'am you see I have done my summer training in basic operations of PLC and Ladder diagram programs from WEBEL ACA. We made a SCADA representation of a cement mill process and simulated the control using a PLC.
P1 : I see so what IS a PLC ??
Me : Ma'am it is basically a control unit, Programmable Logic Control which consists of different modules like Memory modules, I/P O/P modules and the processor module. It is basically used to control different processes in different plants and factories.
P2 : So Arka, tell me something about your hobbies.
Me : Sir I mostly like to play games especially soccer and other outdoor games.
P2 : That is alright but tell me about this Music you have written in your form ??
Me : Sir basically I started to learn Music theory and the synthesizer from a very young age. I have a few certificates from Royal School of Music, London on music theory and practical. Right now I am trying to learn how to play the guitar and I have basic knowledge of theory of its music as well.
P2 : I see. so what are your future plans Arka ??
Me : (looking highly pensive) Sir basically it's a complicated thing....
P2 : (cuts in) Is it complicated or are you confused ??? (laughs)
Me : No sir I am not confused. Basically I want to start my own business but not at this point. I want to complete my MBA and then work in a company, gather contacts and experience and maybe some capital money and then go for entrepreneurship after say 10-15 years.
P2 : So entrepreneurship eh ??
Me : Sir you see I have an interest in B-plan competitions. A friend of mine and I had entered a competition for, I don't know if you have heard sir, Ahmedabad Management Association (P2 nods ,hopefully telling me that he has heard of it) and we qualified for the final round. But unfortunately we could not attend the final since it was on very short notice and we could not go to Ahmedabad from Kolkata.
P2 : So what was this plan about ??
Me : Sir, basically we wanted to start a theme-based cafe. (gave details about the idea until P2 was satisfied)
(Now comes the bombastic question of 'em all)
P1 : Arka do you have a habit of taking pan parag or something ????
Me : (WHATTT !!!!!) NO MA'AM !!! (and I don't even have stained teeth, maybe the lighting was off for her to see properly :P)
P1 and P2 along with P3 : That will be all Arka, thank you thank you.
Me : Thank you sirs and ma'am. Good afternoon.
Overall I think it was a nice experience. NITIE is REALLY REALLY scenic and I would definitely like to go and study there. Let's see how fortunate I was. I hope that I impressed the panelists enough. I stayed at the MDP hostel and also visited the Juhu beach the day after. I had a gala time watching LOTR: The Fellowship of the Rings in my room with the AC on. The entire campus is HUGE and EXTREMELY clean and well maintained. Hoping to go back again :D.

Group Discussion:
Topic: "It is easy to open a shop but to keep it running is an art.
The GD started off with one person talking about being truthful and morality. When I tried to cut in and get back to the topic, he shouted "Please let me finish my point first". It set in a bad mood I guess but I was still smiling and I saw that others were smiling too. After this everyone started to pitch in points and sometimes it got chaotic. The guy who started didn't pitch in anymore, and very soon the panelists intervened and made us stop. And then came the atomic bomb. One of the panelists (later found out to be Mr. Anil Pathak, coordinator of admissions) said : "This was one of the worst GDs I have ever witnessed, nobody was ready to listen and as a result we couldn't assess anyone properly since we couldn't make out anything clearly"
We were then asked to write the summary of the GD in the page provided after which we left.
Needless to say, the atmosphere outside was very dejected as everyone thought that the entire batch would get bad marks. I though thought that the panel was being extra harsh, maybe checking our nerves.
Personal Interview :
I was the third-last to be called inside. I was in panel 1. Panel 2, which started simultaneously, finished 2 hours before panel 1. The interview had the following panelists :
P1= Mr. Anil Pathak
P2= A rounded professor who I think has a maths background because he simply grilled me in maths.
The two panelists had gone for a walk outside and while returning they called me in so I didn't have to say the customary "May I come in"
Me: Good Afternoon sir, (turning to P2) Good afternoon to you too.
P1 and P2 : Good Afternoon. Sit sit, be at ease, no need to be tensed. (As if that were true :D)
P2 : So what is the difference between Applied Electronics and Electronics ?? (Not AGAIN !!!)
Me : Sir basically Applied Electronics Engineers are much more application and industry based. That is our job is more practical and factory-related as compared to Electronics.
P2: So what do pure Electronics Engineers do ??
Me : Sir they can also work in industries but they are more R&D oriented, a bit more into theoretical knowledge. Otherwise it is quite similar.
P2: I see. So what is the difference between summation and integration ?? (Here starts the maths grilling of my life)
Me : Sir in integration there is a slight amount of assumption taken and hence a wee amount of error whereas it is not so in case of summation as in case of summation of natural numbers. (One of my friends is doing B.Sc. in Maths and he said that is was actually a valid point :P)
P2 : (Shakes his head and then asks ) So what is the difference between an algebraic function and a non-algebraic function ??
Me : Sorry sir, I don't know.
P1 (suddenly) : So why is logarithmic call logarithmic ?? How do you find log values ?? (HUH !!!)
Me : Sir basically we find numbers to a particular base.
P1 : That is how you find the Log, but why is it called Logarithmic ???
Me : Sorry sir, I don't know ??
P2 : (writes down an equation y=a.b^x) Tell me is this function linear or non-linear??
Me : Sir it's non-linear
P2 : Is it an exponential function ???
Me : Yes sir I think it is.
P2 : So how can you make this a linear function ??
Me : (confusedly) Sir, take log on both sides.
P2: Don't ask me, do it.
Me : Log y = x Log (a.b) (AAAAAH !! Basic mistake)
P2 : See that is an elementary mistake. Did I say that it is a.b whole to the power x ???
Me : Sorry sir it will be Log y = Log a + x Log b
P2 : Yes. So is that linear ??
Me : Sir I am not sure, I don't think so since x is related to Log y.
P2 : No it is linear, it is called a Log Linear function.
Me : I see sir, I didn't know that.
P1 (suddenly): So do you know Pythagoras ??
Me : Yes sir
P1 : Where was he from France or Greece ?? (WTF is this man ???)
Me : Sir French maybe, I am not sure. (No it's Greece)
P1 : He He ! Check it out when you go back.
Me : Of course Sir.
P2 : So what are your hobbies ?? (Aah at last !!)
Me : Sit it's written there in the form.
P2 : Still you tell us. What, you want a payment to say them ?? (Had a hearty laugh)
Me : (Not finding anything funny) Of course not sir. As I wrote there sir, I love sports and like to play football the most.
P2 : Have you heard of Shiv Khera ???
Me : (boing!!) No sir
P2 : But you have written that you like reading.
Me : I am sorry sir I have not heard of him. (As if I have heard of all the authors in the world)
P2 : So who has written "You can win"
Me : (Didn't I write that I read fiction) Sir I don't know ?? Is it Nandan Nilekani ?? (no it's Shiv Khera)
P2 : I don't know. Why are you asking me ??
Me : Sorry sir, I don't know. I am not into that genre. I read mostly fiction.
P2 : So what is the difference between fiction and novel ??
Me : (How many more weird questions will I get ???) Sir in fiction everything is made up. But in a novel you can have depiction of real events in their original manner or in a story form. (This is partially correct as novels are also mostly fictitious stories)
P2 : You have written Music in hobbies, that is quite vague isn't it ??
Me : (Have you read the whole form or not ??) Sir I...... (cut in by P1)
P1 : No no he has written that he can play the guitar and all. It's here.. you see ??
P2 : Ok ok.
P1 : So do you have any questions for us ??
Me : Yes sir I do (And I asked about the student exchange program at MDI and if they offered any scholarship for that )
P1 : (Explained. No there aren't any scholarships )
P2 : Anything else.
Me : No sir.
P2 : Thank you then, that's all.
P1 : (As I am about to leave) So what is the meaning of Ark ???
Me : Sir it's not Ark, its Arka and it is another name for the sun and Jyoti means light, so it's basically Sunlight.
P2 : Yes yes, now I get it.
Both : Thank you , Best of luck
Me : Thank you sirs
Overall a very strange experience.I don't know what to make of the whole issue. Did I do bad, or was it actually good ?? Time will tell. Hoping for the best. But there were a lot of "I don't know"-s there. So I am quite apprehensive of the matter. Let's see !!

Situational Analysis:
(Not the actual words)
A worker in the factory was caught sneaking out with a couple of light bulbs. The security personnel questioned him and the worker claimed that he had bought the pair of bulbs, but they were not recorded when he entered the facility. You are in charge of administration in the facility and must find a favorable solution. Keep in mind that the company is very strict with its policies on theft. Also, the worker is a member of the workers' Union which may shut down the factory if the worker were to be aggravated. The judicial system is also very strict against such lay offs and may take serious steps against the company. Find a feasible and practical solution to the above problem.
Wrote two practical solutions to the above problem. 30 minutes time to write, which is enough in my opinion. At the end you had to choose one of the two solutions as the best one and which you would have applied in the situation.
Personal Interview stage:
M1 = Middle Aged professor (I think)
M2 = Middle aged professor or alumni
I walked in and the usual pleasantries were exchanged and I was asked to sit down.
M2 : So Arka, tell me what is so special about Applied in Applied Electronics and Instrumentation which you have entered as your degree major ??
Me : Talked about the practical application of the subject and how we can be compatible with any form of industry.
M2 : So what's the difference in the subjects that are taught in your department as compared to the other Electronics departments ??
Me : You see sir, we are basically taught a little from everyone's curriculum. A little o chemical, a little of ECE, a little of IT etc. (We are basically the jacks of the trade.)
M1 : So tell me Arka, what other calls have you got ?
Me : Sir I have got calls from MDI, NITIE and IMI-Delhi.
M1 : And no IIMs ??
Me : No sir :).
M2 : Why no IIMs ?? Is it because of your sectionals ??
Me : I am not sure sir. The IIMs have eccentric ways of selection. (As if I told them not to select me :D)
M1 : So have you attended any campus interviews, Arka ??
Me : Yes sir, I sat only for one company to keep a backup and that is Ambuja Cements.
M1 : So why not joint that company and get some experience ??
Me : No sir, I want to accelerate my career at this point of time and want to get myself into a good company after I finish MBA. I want to finish my studies first and then look forward to working.
M2 : (suddenly) So tell me what's your opinion on life ??
Me : (wtf !! Life ?? I am not exactly the spiritual type, you know?) Sir I think I have too little knowledge to make an educated comment on the matter. I mean, it's a very deep matter.
M2 : But still, you have lived...(looks into the form)...22 years of your life, how much percentage is that ??
Me : (smiles) Sir, I don't know how long I would live. So I can't tell you the percentage.
M2 : Okk take a guess, consider the average.
Me : One-third I guess sir, maybe a bit more if I am lucky :).
M2 : (presses on) But still tell me your opinion.
Me : Sir, I think that if we humans put our mind to something then we can definitely achieve anything. For example I didn't do good after my +2 since I was not focused, and got confused between IIT, WBJEE and AIEEE. During CAT I was much more focused and thereby achieved a decent level of achievement.
M2 : Hmmm. That's good ! What else ??
Me : Sir, I think that we should also try to experience different things in life so that we do not regret anything later. If you will look into my hobbies you will see that I like sports, music, reading as well as writing. We should always try new things.
M2 : So what new things have you tried recently ??
Me : (He He) Sir I have started writing professional articles for different blogs. Sort of freelancing.
M2 : So do you get paid ?? How much have you saved ??
Me : Sir about ** dollars.
M1 : So tell me Arka, suppose I were interested in this work, how would I start ??
Me : Well sir, there are two ways. There is a site called xyz.com where you can put up your profile and then apply to jobs. Or you can work with an acquaintance (a friend) who would act as the mediator between you and the client.
M1 : Hmmm. That is nice. So music ?? What guitar do you play ??
Me : Sir, spanish.
M1 : Lead ??
Me : Yes sir.
(Now comes the worst part of the interview where I think I screwed up big time. I was semi-honest. Actually I was fighting with my conscience.)
M1 : So Arka, suppose you were to convert all of your calls, that is , MDI, NITIE and IMT-G. where would you go ??
Me : (sweating :P) Well sir truthfully speaking, I would go for NITIE since the fees are very low. I cannot compare the colleges on any other grounds since all of them are at a same footing.
M1 : OK. Now between MDI and IMT-G where would you go ??
Me : (C'mon sir, where would YOU had gone) Sir I think that the marketing in IMT-G is very well renowned. MDI is a tad bit more costly.
M1 : I see. Well Arka that's it from our side, do you want to ask us something ??
Me : No sir, thank you.
Both : Best of luck for your other calls, Have a nice day !!
Just for the record my primary aim is MDI-Gurgaon, then NITIE and then IMT-G. I am really sorry that I had to lie, but it was simply for the interview. Maybe I should have been truthful. Apologies.
All in all, the interviewers were very friendly and supportive. No pressure from their side. They didn't ask me anything out of the ordinary. I kept my calm, though it wavered in the end.
Feedback is welcome !!

What we can't do for CBS....
The answer to the above question is, without thought, NOTHING !!
And here's what 3 of us did in the name of CBS...
And here's what 3 of us did in the name of CBS...
Nothing BIG if your expecting so.... Here's the story....
So sugata and I go off to CNMC to watch the battle of the bands on 4th september 2009, friday. An ardent request from bhutu(Pratik Paul) was the only motivating force behind doing such a colossus feat. (you have no idea how lazy we are).
So the band competition gets over and we are loitering about in the campus thinking what to do when bhutu hurries to meet us saying that he has to be present at the DUMB CHARRADES competition because he's involved in the council and all. Suddenly we decide that since we had nothing better to do, why not join the competition. All 3 of us agreed, BUT......one problem was there...it was an INTER-COLLEGE event.
I currently study in HITK, sugata in Ashutosh and bhutu is in CNMC, the host college. Suddenly a brainstorm comes to us. We had ONE thing in common....all of us were from CBS.....so be it. We register under the name of CBS in an inter-college competition (LOLZ)....with obvious backing from our dearest bhutu.
We came in FIRST out of 13 teams in the prelims and came SECOND in the finals out of 6 teams.
Readers don't get me wrong...I am not flaunting our petty win in a dumb charrades competition in a college fest. It's the school spirit that I want to bring forward. It still lingers on after almost 4 years after all 3 of us passed out.
CBS always was and always will be the closest to our hearts because that is where we have left behind our childhood. Friends, divided by the world, can find the deepest of attractions because of that intense respect and love we hold for that place. I have already found my heaven on earth, the place where I have made the best of friends.
Hail alma mater, we sing to thee........

AEIE...what I expected and what I got !!
APPLIED ELECTRONICS AND INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING....
Hefty name eh ?? That's all it has though.....a name !! Now before reading the entire thing please keep in mind that I only talk about what I have experienced so far in MY college...the scenario might be different in other institutes.
3 years back, after 4 thousand worthy students had been counselled I went into the hallowed halls to pick up my choice of graduation stream. My only thought was to study Electronics in one of the moderate colleges in the city. When the person at the desk told me that AEIE was available, I was quite reassured. I had taken up a branch of the subject I wanted to study. Boy was I wrong.
Now I realize that I have studied more about instrumentation and control rather than electronics..heck I haven't learned ANYTHING worthwhile in electronics. Then how is it that this subject is held in high esteem, almost at par with ECE and above CSE and IT ??? It should be positioned along with its sister Instrumentation and Control which is taken up normally by students of much lower merit. Here lies the brand game yet again. The "electronics" tag is a brilliant and cunning addition to the name of the subject so as to attract better minds to the hapless subject. It seems that in the industry the subject does have importance, but it remains a big question as to why misguide the likes of me who had a dream in pure electronics ??
AEIE is not a bad subject, but it is one in which the subjects are far less oriented to electronics and more so on instruments, control and process handling. All such subjects are, I think, extremely laborious and fit for those who have the gift of rote learning. I, personally, depend more on logic based studies which hopefully involves mathematics as it is my favourite.
As conclusion I'll say that I do not discourage upcoming students to take up AEIE but I bring forward the truth. I shall not say that I have wasted my years on the subject but it is also true that I have no desire in furthering my studies in the same field.

Man's greatest weakness
Yup I wanna be rich. And who doesn't ? But what's the secret behind efficient money making ?? From a very young age mine and your parents too, must have said ,"Work hard for these 5 years and you will never have to strive in the future again". Oh really ??? So right now if I study 23 and a half hours a day, in the near future is Citibank gonna come up to me and say, "Congrats! Since you worked so hard for the last 5 years now you shall sit back and relax FOREVER" ???
NOT GONNA HAPPEN !!
You see there is a very strange kind of irony which governs this knotty situation. Its true, it IS possible to earn a lot of money if you work hard now. But when you are 30 and you have lots of cash in your bank account, can you buy back your youth ?? That time you'll have such a high cholesterol level together with sugar, blood pressure and what not that McDonald's would be completely out of bounds for you. Whats the use of buying Reebok tees with Pepe jeans when you have grown a 35'' tummy having sat in your AC cubicle for your sorry 15 hours shift. You either get money or happiness. So choose....
Now it comes to the question as to why then, after knowing all this, am I so interested in making money ?? The answer lies in Man's oldest and greatest weakness, HOPE ! Although I know that millions in the world have made the same mistake I HOPE that I shall be an exception. I shall find happiness even after being rich. I hope I am right.
Its so pitiful to see that its not only me but everyone of my age who are suffering from the same disillusion . Some have realized it, some are doing it now having read this article but still we hold on to that sorry feeling of hope.
We hope to be different, we hope to succeed....and I hope that I am wrong in all that I said.
